Abstract

Introduction: Soft tissue balancing is a crucial factor determining the success in total knee arthroplasty. Gap balancing (GB) and measured resection (MR) are the two commonly used techniques. Therefore, a scoping review is needed to evaluate these two techniques and provide essential clinical evidence.

Patients and Methods: The study was conducted as a systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search of soft tissue balancing techniques in total knee arthroplasty was performed using the PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect databases (from January 2005 to May 2025). After the screening process, 10 studies were selected for inclusion and synthesis.

Results: From the three main databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect), 54 full-text articles were reviewed, and 10 studies were finally included in the systematic and analysis.

Conclusion: Both the GB and MR techniques provided favorable clinical outcomes. However, the GB technique tended to achieve superior soft tissue balance, reduce limb alignment deviation, and enhance joint stability in flexion.
