The hand holds an essential role in our lives, it is the tool for labor and daily activities. There are numerous methods to treat metacarpal and phalangeal fractures and plate fixation, which have many benefits. This technique has been routinely applied at Viet Duc University Hospital for a significant duration, showing promising therapeutic outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the consequences of operative fixation with microplates in treating metacarpal and phalangeal fractures in adults. Patients and methods: This cross-sectional descriptive retrospective study was conducted on 60 patients diagnosed with metacarpal and phalangeal fractures and underwent plate fixation surgery at Viet...

The septate gallbladder is a rare abnormality with either multiple septums or a single septum. In our case, a 32-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital for right upper quadrant abdominal pain accompanied by fever. Abdominal CT scan show acute cholecystitis, no gallstones. Preoperative diagnosis: Acute cholecystitis suspected peritoneal biliary infiltration, indicated for emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Intraoperative, the septate gallbladder is enlarged, the wall is thick, and the duodenum is attached. In particular, the fundus compartment of the gallbladder showed necrosis. There were no complications during surgery. Conclusions: The septate gallbladder can cause complications of gallstones, cholecystitis and especially...

Pancreatic cancer is associated with poor outcomes, and surgery is the only curative treatment for pancreatic head cancer, though prognostic factors are limited. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) in predicting outcomes in a Vietnamese population undergoing the Whipple procedure. Patients and Methods: A total of 89 patients who underwent the Whipple procedure for pancreatic head cancer between January 2013 and August 2020 at Viet Duc University Hospital were included. The patients were classified into two groups based on their PNI: <50 and ≥ 50. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed between the...

Lesions in the petrous apex region present a significant challenge for surgeons due to the deep location at the skull base and complex anatomical relations. The Kawase approach, or partial resection of the anterior petrous temporal bone, though widely adopted worldwide, remains under-researched in Vietnam. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 25 patients treated surgically using the Kawase approach at Viet Duc University Hospital from January 2022 to May 2024 Results: The average age was 53.9 years, with a male/female ratio of 1/5,25. Clinical symptoms included: Trigeminal nerve pain/numbness (60%), headaches (52%), and dizziness (40%). Regarding...

Superior mesenteric venous thrombosis (SMVT) is a complication of intra-abdominal venous disease that poses a serious risk to patients. It is one of the significant causes of acute intestinal ischemia, accounting for approximately 16% of total cases. Recent research and treatment experiences have improved the diagnosis and treatment of SMVT, particularly due to advancements in imaging technology and enhanced medical knowledge. This report describes two cases of irreversible intestinal ischemia caused by superior mesenteric venous thrombosis from different etiologies, treated with surgical resection of the affected bowel segment combined with anticoagulation therapy. Early diagnosis and combined treatment, priority is given...

To evaluate and analyze the initial experience of robot-assisted radical nephrectomy (RARN) at Binh Dan Hospital. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 46 patients diagnosed with renal tumors who underwent RARN at Binh Dan Hospital from January 2023 to May 2024. Clinical characteristics, surgical procedures, and complications were recorded and analyzed. Results: 46 patients (29 males, 17 females, median age 58 years, range 48 to 69) were treated. The median tumor diameter was 68 mm with 24, 20 and 2 patients were classified into cT1N0M0, cT2N0M0 and cT3aN0M0, respectively. No patients required conversion to open surgery, and the...

It remains controversial whether mesh should be fixed during totally extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair. This prospective study was done to determine the outcomes of patients undergoing totally extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair without mesh fixation. Patients and Methods: This was a prospective study on 250 patients with 289 inguinal hernias who underwent TEP repair without mesh fixation between January 2020 and December 2020 with an average of forty-two months postoperative follow - up at the Department of General Surgery, Can Tho General Hospital, Viet Nam. Results: The mean age was 52.95 ± 17.75 years. There were 282 primary, 211 unilateral...

Số 03 - Tập 14 07/01/2025

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of renal cancer. Nowadays, most tumors are discovered incidentally at an early stage, thus changing the overall prognosis of the disease. Histological prognostic factors have been accepted as major prognostic factors for decades however, the predictive value of microvascular invasion (MVI) remains debatable. We performed this study to evaluate the prognostic role of MVI in RCC. Patients and Methods: A cohort study, including 191 RCC patients undergoing laparoscopic retroperitoneal radical nephrectomy from January 2013 to April 2021 at Viet Duc University Hospita. Results: the rate of microvascular invasion was 18/191 patients...

Số 03 - Tập 14 07/01/2025

Although laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been considered to have more advantages than open cholecystectomy, the incidence of bile duct injury still remains high. One of the reasons reported is biliary ductal anomalies, especially extrahepatic bile duct. We reported two cases in which the patients had the right posterior sectional duct entering the cystic duct. Bail-out procedure (fundus-first technique) was performed for both cases and the patient were discharged safely without bile duct injury. Keyword: biliary ductal anomalies, variant biliary anatomy, bile duct injury. Số 03 - Tập 14 07/01/2025

The quality of lymph node dissection plays an important role in laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary cancers and significantly affects the patient's survival. Among the degrees of lymphadenectomy, the standard level is routinely performed in a range of centers. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the results of standard lymphadenectomy in laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary cancers. Patients an Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. We analyzed the data from 65 cases witnessing laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy with standard lymphadenectomy due to periampullary cancers from February 1st, 2017 to January 31st, 2022, at University Medical Center at Ho Chi Minh City. Results: The average...

Số 03 - Tập 14 07/01/2025

Primary closure of choledochotomy (PCC) following common bile duct (CBD) exploration is increasingly accepted. However, this technique is associated with complications, primarily bile leaks, especially when retained CBD stones are present. To mitigate these risks and enhance outcomes, we propose a comprehensive procedural approach that includes laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), CBD exploration, endoscopic lithotripsy of bile duct stones, and antegrade biliary stenting. Patients and Methods: From January 2020 to December 2022, a total of 15 patients with cholelithiasis and associated common bile duct stones (CL-CBDS) underwent LC, CBD exploration with endoscopic lithotripsy of bile duct stones, and antegrade biliary stenting at...

The location of the primary entry tear not only affects the prognosis but also the treatment strategy for aortic dissection. This study evaluated the relationship between the primary entry tear and surgical outcomes for acute type A aortic dissection. Patients and methods: A retrospective descriptive study of consecutive patients with acute type A aortic dissection who underwent surgery at Viet Duc University Hospital between 2021 and 2022. Results: There were 89 patients included in this study. The primary entry tear in the ascending aorta accounted for 43.8%; the group with the primary entry tear in the aortic arch and the...
